The book that changed our lives

For all of you that tried to click through on the book link to see what it was all about, I fixed the link.  Here it is: Good Calories, Bad Calories.

(For those of you that didn't read the previous post and have no idea what I'm talking about:  Frank and I are eating less carbs for health reasons thanks to this book, Good Calories, Bad Calories.)

Gasp! A salad for lunch!

I had a salad for lunch.  I would dare to bet that none of you have ever seen me eat a salad at a restaurant ... because this is the first time I think I've ever ordered a salad at a restaurant.  It wasn't too bad ... especially with the Red Ale to go with it!

This is a direct result of Frank and I deciding to eat less carbs ... all because of Good Calories, Bad Calories. (And the best things I could find on the menu were steak, fajitas and salads.  I got the cajun salmon salad because we've had lots of steak recently and we're having Mexican for dinner.)

How much caffeine in your Starbucks coffee?

Ever wondered how much caffeine was in your Starbucks coffee?  Between 6 and 20 mg/oz depending on what type.  Here's the chart with all the info.   Diet Coke (my drink) has 3.75 mg/oz and Mountain Dew has 4.5 mg/oz.  So coffee is worse than Mountain Dew!

Famous tortilla de patatas!

This is a Flickr badge showing public photos from the Tortilla de patatas group pool. Make your own badge here.

Maybe some of you remember the Tortilla de Patatas that I made - my first ever.  It's now part of the Tortilla de patatas group on Flickr!

Crawdad party!

Crawfish2_3 We had our annual crayfish party!  Frank blogged about it over at Life of a Hunter, An evening with friends and crawdads!  We had a great time and really enjoyed visiting with everyone.

Here are some pictures and here are some more.  (I'd put a Flickr badge here but Flickr won't let me specify someone else's set.  I can display them by tag or one of my set but not someone else's set.)

Yummy spinach crepes

491919879_59b792a094_m I had yummy spinach crepes at Cafe Mason in San Francisco yesterday.  They came with an awesome fruit salad that included everything from blackberries and strawberries to melon and bananas.

Just be sure you leave any crying babies at home as they are sure to let everyone know that "Crying babies are not welcome here for other customer's precious peaceful dining moments."   The waitress tried to take my menu away before I had a good picture and I said  "Wait! I'm going to blog about that."
491919237_c284fdfb7e"You and everyone else." Maybe that's why I got such unfriendly service. Not bad, just not friendly.

Can you live off $5/week?

This husband and wife team is trying to eat off $10 for two weeks.  They each have their own $10 and their own stash of food.

It's interesting because Frank and I were just talking about this on the way to work yesterday.  What would you eat or buy if you had limited funds but access to a kitchen? Here are some of the things that would be on my list:

  • oatmeal
  • lots of beans
  • canned vegetables
  • peanut butter
  • whole wheat bread
  • maybe some bananas

Worst airplane food ever

Groceries for a week on a boat

2474129_cf3188b552_3 We're chartering a sailboat from the Moorings for seven days and we had to order all of groceries ahead of time.  It was hard to plan all of our needs for a week in an environment we aren't used to.  How much water do you need?  How many cookies?  What to eat for breakfast?  We ended up planning for four meals onboard: cornish game hens, salmon, mahi-mahi and steak.  Frank is planning two of them and our friend Barbara is planning the other two.  Then we planned to eat most of our breakfasts and lunches on board with lots of snacks and appetizers included.  We didn't skimp on anything and all our food and drinks ended up costing us almost $800 (for five people) from Bobby's.

We ordered by downloading their spreadsheet, filling out our order, sending it back to them via email and then they sent us a quote.  They will deliver it to our boat at noon on Thursday!  I'll let you know how it goes!

Caffeine is not a stimulant

244455572_bf43493124 Turns out that coffee in the morning doesn't make you any more alert than non-coffee drinkers.  However, if you are addicted to caffeine and you don't get your coffee, you will be less alert than those non-coffee drinkers.  This University of Bristol study found:

all the drink does is counteract the mild caffeine withdrawal symptoms people are experiencing because they have gone without the stimulant overnight.

And those who drink a caffeinated drink first thing are no more alert than those who never consume one.

So, drink coffee if you like it, but if you are doing it just to help you stay awake or to be more alert in the morning ... you'll need to find something else.

No candy bar for me ...

I wasn't meant to have a candy bar today ...

  • I started with a trip to the break room with one dollar bill and two dimes,
  • The machine was no longer taking dollar bills so even though I have free cokes at work, I decided to buy a 50 cent coke,
  • Now I had a diet coke, two quarters and two dimes,
  • According to the machine a Twix was 70 cents,
  • I put in my change, hit the code for a Twix and was informed that the Twix was really 85 cents,
  • So I changed my mind and hit the code for Reeces Peanut Butter Cups,
  • The peanut butter cups started to come out but got hung up on metal hook,
  • I banged the machine with my hip (much more effective than hitting it with your hand) and they came out from under the hook but got stuck on the M&Ms next to them,
  • A trip back upstairs proved I had no more change anywhere,
  • ...
  • So I went for a walk instead!

Bad Wine & Tasting it

If you are like me, you hate being the one who has to taste the wine because you aren't really sure what you are supposed to be doing.  I know you are only supposed to send it back if it's bad, not if you don't like it.  But what is bad?  Somebody finally wrote an article to help us out,  Wines: Bad Wine.

Food and Culture

Americans associate food with health. Many other nations associate food with pleasure. And most of them are healthier. "The researchers found that Americans worry more about food and derive less pleasure from eating than people in any other nation they surveyed."

Historical Fiction - How do medieval-themed restaurants get it wrong? By Mark Schatzker

Here's an interesting article about what food was really like in the Middle Ages, Historical Fiction - How do medieval-themed restaurants get it wrong? By Mark Schatzker. For anyone who has suffered through one of the modern medieval-themed restaurants, you will be relieved to know that your ancestors did have better taste in food than that.

Crawdad Boil!

Img_0623
We're having a "crawdad" boil! We have 70 pounds of crawdads! That's good since we have at least 49 people coming and these are going to be good! I wish my grandmother could be here. She really enjoyed crayfish. She even posted about it in her blog.
Img_0624 Here's one to give you a sense of scale.
